Chapel of the Calvary
Setting
Urban, isolated, outstanding and harmonious arrangement in an echelon patterned atrium flanked by two crosses made of granite; in front of a large square with trees.
Description
Chapel of longitudinal ground plan, regular, volumes arranged on the horizontal, with differentiated covering with a gable-roof. Main facade facing Southwest, bounded by stonework corners, opened by two regular big windows and surmounted by an eye-window; crowned with angular gable-end surmounted at the top by a bell tower with a cross, flanked by pinnacles. Southeast facade shaped in straight gable-end opened by two straight doors, leading to the nave and sacristy. Northeast facade, blind, shaped in angular gable-end bounded by stonework corners. Northwest facade, blind shaped in straight gable-end. INTERIOR of the chapel: Single space paved with floor-tiles and overlay at a medium height of white and blue wall-tiles (end of the 20th Century), covering with wooden roof arranged in three planes supported by transversal girders.
High altar with curved pediment includes the Calvary on an altar with a glass altar-cloth with a Recumbent Christ. Lighting is done through two windows of the main facade and the eye-window, which is similar to that of the portal, has a straight frame from the interior. The whole piece of the Calvary is composed of a statue of the Crucified Christ flanked by two statues with a wooden framework depicting the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The two lateral altars include the statues of Our Lord of the Passos (Steps) (the Gospel) and Our Lord of the Cana Verde (Green Cane) (Epistle). Holy water font of an hexagonal shape.
