Popular Saints                                                                                                         

June brings us the popular heat of the summer and parties. It is the perfect union of the sacred and the profane. June is wrapped in a mystery of exotic smells, sounds and flavors that conquer any mortal. It is the popular manifestation of joy mixed with grilled sardines, and home made bread (made from maze or corn), green broth, wine and the traditional folclore dance to help the digestion.

 

It is a joyful moment, intoxicaed with the perfume of manjericos (basils) and rosmaninhos (french lavender or rosemaries). All over Portugal , people celebrate the Popular Saints. The patron Saint is St. John. One of the primary characteristics are the popular marches.
